Q3 2009, Without standards making meaningful independent comparisons of device performance would not be possible. This has not gone unnoticed by the OPV, OLED lighting and OTFT communities. Each community is actively working to establish specific standards for organic devices. Such activity signals an increased level of confidence in the technology’s ability to perform within a defined set of parameters, it also signals an increased level of confidence in the industry’s ability to manufacture devices to a set of defined parameters. Both are important for the commercialisation of the technology.
This increased focus on standards is a clear signal that organic semiconductor technologies are maturing fast and are ever closer to being commercialised. Not too long ago the power conversion efficiency of organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices was at best about 2%. Over the past twelve months OPV cell efficiencies has changed dramatically.…. |

The 2009 Faraday Medal, one of the Institute's three gold medals, has been awarded to Professor Donal Bradley FRS for his pioneering work in the field of plastic electronics. Professor Bradley who holds the Lee Lucas Chair in Experimental Physics, is Director of the newly established Centre for Plastic Electronics at Imperial.
Professor Bradley's research focuses on optimising plastic semiconductors for use in a wide range of electronic devices, with applications spanning displays, lighting, electronics, solar energy, communications and medical diagnostics. |

The Printable Electronics Technology Centre (Petec), based at NETPark in Sedgfield, UK, has announced that it will receive £20 million to expand its facility and services.
Petec will receive £12 million from the UK Government’s Advanced Manufacturing strategy, and £8 million from the Regional Development Agency – One North East. |

Yamagata University and Prof. Junji Kido and business partner have established a company to commercialise OLED lighting technology with a range of lights.
The new company called “Organic Lighting” will initially be based at the University's Venture Business Laboratory in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture. The new Company will seek to put OLED lighting products on the market in early 2010, and aims to post sales of several billion yen (about US$10 - 20 millions) by 2014. |
