Polyera achieves certified 9.1% efficiency for polymer photovoltaic devices

The availability of materials affording higher performance and lifetime is the key to unlocking the great potential of organic photovoltaic technology

30 January 2012

Polyera Corp has announced the company achieved a “world-record” 9.1% efficient polymer/fullerene organic solar cell in an inverted bulk heterojunction architecture using its newest proprietary organic semiconductor material - ActivInk™ PV2000. The device performance was certified by Newport Corporation's PV Cell Lab.

By successfully 9.1% power-conversion efficiency combined with an inverted cell architecture Polyera has made a significant step towards achieving lower cost, longer lifetimes and high performance organic photovoltaic devices.

According to Polyera their active layer materials can be deposited using a significantly broader range of film thicknesses without lowering cell efficiency leading to improvements in yields and a simpler manufacturing process. In addition the materials can be processed at temperatures low enough to be compatible with a wide range of simple printing processes and common, inexpensive plastic substrates like PET or PEN.

Antonio Facchetti, Founder & CTO of Polyera, “We have concentrated our [solar] work on the chemistry of these materials and found a new way to design and combine the active layer building blocks to maximize certain optical and electrical properties.” Antonio added “These latest results bring us a significant step closer to enabling true commercialization.”

Philippe Inagaki, Founder & CEO, said, “It is broadly recognized that the availability of materials affording higher performance and lifetime is the key to unlocking the great potential of OPV technology and the past year has seen rapid advances on this front.” Philippe added, “We are excited to further support the commercialization of OPV technology with our latest generation of ActivInk™ PV materials.”
